Shall we walk?

The problem:

TfL approached designers at Central Saint Martins with a major dilemma. Congestion. Specifically, congestion during peak times on the tube.

The solution:

To tackle this issue myself and two other designers formed Studio Bench and created the #Shallwewalk? campaign. The ethos of the idea was to encourage commuters to get off a stop before the busiest station and walk to their destination. We saw a wasted opportunity here to create a more proactive movement among Londoners.

We decided to employ witty illustration and audio announcements to encourage people to consider the mental health benefits of walking and avoiding overcrowded stations during morning peak times.  The principle concept was to embody two alternative realities that could be easily altered with a simple change of habit. We wanted to use humour in order to reach commuters in a manner that was not explicitly didactic or overbearing.  This was reflected in the choice of caricature-like human forms and vibrant otherworldly colours.
